These photographs are part of an ongoing theme which I have been shooting a number of year on my regular visits to Madeira The island is cris crossed with hundreds of levadas or irrigation channels which move the water around the island from the wetter northern part of the island to the drier south. They were developed from early 16th century and were all dug by hand. They now provide fantastic walking as they have a foot path alongside for maintenance due the mountainous terrain and still largely cannot be reached by modern machinery.
